Dell
Rapids Lions hosted one of their monthly meat raffles on Friday, Feb.
2nd, at Norby's on Main Street in Dells. "We had a good crowd of
enthusiastic ticket buyers, as well as Lions who sold the tickets,"
said Lion Marlowe Hovey, co-chair of the club's fundraising event.
Nine
rounds of 32 tickets are sold for $1 each. The game wheel is spun at
the end of each round of ticket sales. The winner chooses their prize
from a selection of packages of meat provided by the local County Fair
grocery store. The numbers adjacent to the winner each receive a token
for a free drink from Norby's.
Tickets in the 10th and final
round sell for $5 each, with that winner getting the last package of
meat and half of that round's pot, $80.
Proceeds (less the cost
of the meat) go into a club account used only for the benefit of the
community, like the club's $1000 scholarship for a local high school
senior, the local food bank, eyeglasses or hearing aides for qualifying
persons in need, or other purposes specifically approved by Lions Clubs
International. That is true of all fundraisers conducted by the club.
"Our meat raffles have been a reliable source of income for our club,"
said Hovey. "This partnership with Norby's and County Fair gives us the
ability to financially support many local needs."
Only two Lions
meat raffles remain on the calendar before the summer break. They will
be on Fridays, March 1st and April 5th, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
